on " Oriental Sore" by Captain Henry Smith, I.M.S. In the course of this article under the heading of "Treatment" he condemns " nitric acid and such agents" as "unnecessarily severe," because " they remove the sound with the diseased tissues and leave a scar larger than is necessary, a point of importance when the ulcer happens to be on the face." The treatment, however, which he recommends, namely, the use of either arsenious or pyrogallic acid must also leave a scar, though not perhaps so large as if nitric acid were used ; in fact whatever agent is used, or if no treatment at all be employed, these sores when healed " invariably leave an indelible scar." Now this is a point of importance if the ulcer be situated on any exposed part of the skin, and more especially so in a fair European skin than in a dark native
